Reminder … e-prescriptions requirement – March 2016
Time flies, and mandatory e-prescriptions will be back before you know it. Last year, the Governor of NYS quietly extended the deadline for e-prescriptions… just days before the mandate was set to take effect. You now have until March 27th 2016 to comply. According to the New York State Department of Health: By March 27, 2015, all prescriptions (including prescriptions for non-controlled substances) issued in New York State must be electronically transmitted, with certain limited exceptions. Even if you generate and print your prescriptions from your Practice Management/EHR software, it is not considered electronic. Faxing doesn’t “count” either. What does this mean for your practice?
The Transition to Paperless/Electronic Records
If you are not using some form of Practice Management/Imaging software yet, these pushes towards paperless systems will eventually force your hand. Log books and prescription pads will soon be a thing of the past.
Backup Backup Backup!
You likely already have imaging data, patient data, and other documents stored on your computer systems. It’s vitally important you have redundant backups and a disaster recovery plan in place to protect this information. The more paperless requirements there are , the more information you have to store. Backups protect your business and your patients!
Integration with Practice Management
While there are e-prescriptions services around, they don’t always integrate into your Practice Management software. Some are paid, and some are free, but one that is integrated is likely the best solution. That way, you don’t have to enter patient information in 2 different places or systems. Right now, here is what we know regarding implementation:
- Easy Dental: Currently, EasyDental Version 2011 has the ability to e-prescribe built in. There is a monthy fee to the clearinghouse that backs the e-prescribe module.
- Dentrix: Currently version G5 and G6 have the capability built in. There is a monthy fee to the clearinghouse that backs the e-prescribe module.
- Eaglesoft: the latest version has this capability available as an additional (paid) addon feature. There is a monthy fee to the clearinghouse that backs the e-prescribe module.
- SoftDent and Praticeworks: the latest versions have this capability available as an additional (paid) addon feature. There is a monthy fee to the clearinghouse that backs the e-prescribe module.
